A killdeer, or Charadrius vociferus is a type of plover - a small, long-legged brown bird that hands out in fields and farms. They love ballparks, golf courses, and other similar areas. They can also be found along the shores of lakes and streams.
The killdeer are around 11" long and only about 3oz in weight. They make high, piping calls. Note that the killdeer has two dark bands on its neck, which is different from other birds of this size and shape.
Killdeer live on a diet of small insects and small fish. Note that if you get too near a killdeer's nest, the bird will feign an injury, drawing you away from her precious eggs.
