How to make a Crochet Bobble

Finished Bobble,

Crocheted Bobbles are very quick and easy to make, and are a nice way to add texture or interest to an item or garment.

The bobbles are quickly made by crocheting a number of double or treble crochet stitches into a ring and then gathering around the edge to form a small bobble. These can then be stitched onto garments, hung from crochet chain as decoration, attached to a bag for texture etc. The size can easily be varied by changing the thickness of the yarn and size of the hook, for instance a large bobble can be made by using chunky yarn and a large hook, or a tiny bobble by crocheting with fine yarn and a small hook.

The bobble in the picture below was attached to the egg cozy using a crocheted chain that was crocheted using one strand of yarn and some very thin craft wire. This can then be bent and shaped as required!

Instructions:
Make 4 chain stitches and then work 11 treble stitches into the 4th chain from the hook (ie the first chain stitch made). Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of at least 6 inches.

Then using a sewing needle or a crochet hook, thread the end of the yarn through each of the stitches and pull tight to form a ball. Tie a knot to fasten and the bobble is finished!

Some ideas for using crocheted bobbles.
Stuff them to use as buttons.

Make a number of bobbles in red or purple and sew together as cherries or grapes.

Stitch onto hair bands for something a little different.

Make three or so out of silk and adorn with Swarovski beads, stitch together and fasten to a pin to wear as a brooch.

Make a number and fasten onto lengths of crocheted chain stitch and use to decorate the end of scarves as an alternative to tassels, or stitch throughout the scarf to provide additional interest.

Make bobbles and thread onto leather thronging, tie a knot to hold into place and wear as a necklace.

...and the list goes on. If you have any other ideas for how a crocheted bobble could be used or perhaps you have your own ideas for how to make crochet decorations then do let me know. Either pop into the forum or send me an email using the contact button on the site.
