Mother's Day in Ireland is on a rotating schedule, based on the date on which Easter falls. It is halfway into Lent, which begins 40 days before Easter Sunday. It is both a religious and secular holiday, as the Blessed Mother, Mary, is thought of foremost and the faithful reflect on her sorrow to come on Good Friday. Then, they go home and thank God for their own dear mothers, bringing presents, cards, candies, and taking over the household duties.
Often sisters, sisters-in-law, and other women in the family will visit each other for a cup of tea and to drop off a little memento of the day to each other as well. Mother’s Day is a celebration of all mothers, not just the one that gave birth to you.
