Brooks, Frederick P. Jr. The Mythical Man Month: Essays on Software Engineering: Anniversary Edition with Four New Chapters. (Reading, Mass.: Addison-Wesley, 1995.)

A classic book of essays about computing projects and software engineering. Thirty-five years from original publication, these essays still contain valuable information for those of us involved in software engineering and other computer projects. [My review]

Michael Feathers. Working Effectively with Legacy Code. (Upper Saddle River, NJ:Prentice Hall, 2004.)

Using automated testing as a method to partition and rewrite legacy applications. [Buy at Amazon.com]

Martin Fowler. Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code. (San Francisco: Addison-Wesley, 1999.)

The classic book on refactoring. Also includes an excellent introduction to unit testing. [Buy at Amazon.com]
McConnell, Steve. Code Complete: A Practical Handbook of Software Construction. 2nd Edition. (Redmond, WA: Microsoft Press, 2004).

A classic on writing good code. If you code, test, specifiy or supervise people who do any of the above, you should be familiar with this book. [Buy at Amazon.com]

Captain Minnie Hill was the first woman to receive a pilot's license on the technically difficult Columbia River.
