Quilt Blocks of the States - New York

New York - 12" Quilt Block

The next block in our state block series is New York. This pieced quilt block pattern features a star set in a flag.

Fabric Key:

Cutting Instructions:

  • Cut one 3-1/2" square
  • Cut four 2" squares
  • Cut four 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles

  • Cut one 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle
  • Cut two 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" rectangles

  • Cut two 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles
  • Cut one 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" rectangle

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1: With a pencil (or your favorite marking method), draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all white 2" squares.

Step 2: Place a white 2" square on the right end of a blue 2" x 3-1/2" rectangle right sides together. Stitch along the line that you drew in Step 1. Cut apart away the excess fabric 1/4" above the drawn line. Press the seam toward the white fabric and trim the points. Place a white 2" square on the left end of a blue 2" x 3-1/2" rectangle right sides together. Stitch along the line that you drew in Step 1. Cut apart away the excess fabric 1/4" above the drawn line. Press the seam toward the white fabric and trim the points. Repeat three more times for a total of four blue/white flying geese units.

Step 3: Arrange the blue and white pieces as shown below and sew into rows. Press seams away from the flying geese units.

Step 4: Sew the rows together to form the block. Press seams toward the center.

Step 5: Sew a 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" white strip to the top and bottom of a 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" red strip as shown below. Press seams toward the red strip.

Step 6: Sew a 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" red strip to the top and bottom of a 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" white strip as shown below. Press seams toward the red strips.

Step 5: Sew the star unit to the shorter stripe unit as shown below. Press seam toward the stripe unit. Sew the star/stripe unit to the longer strip unit to finish the block. Press seams toward the red strip.


Your block should measure 12-1/2" on all sides. It will measure 12" finished size when it is sewn into a quilt.
