On the first disc, Ash begins his Pokemon journey and gets Pikachu, his first Pokemon. On that disc, he also meets Misty and Brock, catches Caterpie, and Ash gets his first two badges.
On the second disc, Ash acquires Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle; he earns his third Pokemon badge; Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket end up shipwrecked and stranded on the Island of Giant Pokemon; and Misty acquires Horsea.
On the third disc, Ash lets go of his Butterfree, battles a Pokemon trainer with a psychic Pokemon, earns two more Pokemon badges, and acquires Primeape. In the last episode of disc three, Misty acquires the now infamous Psyduck.
When you put a disc into your DVD player, it goes to the Viz Media logo after the FBI Warning, and then directly to the main menu. The main menu only has two options: "Play" and "Episodes." The "Play" feature allows you to play all of the episodes back-to-back, while the "Episodes" feature allows you to choose where to begin watching on the disc. However, if you finish an episode using the "Episode" feature, the disc will automatically take you to the next episode on the disc.
There is only one extra included on each DVD, and it's the same extra on each one. The extra is the full-length "Pokerap," which is a song and rap that sometimes appeared at the end of an episode if filler was needed, although many times, it would be a shortened version of the track. Here, the "Pokerap" is in its entirety.
The only drawback to this feature is that it cannot be accessed through the main menu. The only way to access it is to watch the disc all the way to the end, because the "Pokerap" is tacked on after the ending credits of the last episode on the disc. You can also access the "Pokerap" by choosing to watch the second half of the last episode on the disc, and then hitting the "Skip" button on your DVD remote to get to the "Pokerap."
In some respects, the set is disappointing, because Viz Media obviously put it together "on the cheap." However, for a Pokemon fan, you need to pick up this set if you want to acquire the series on DVD.
This set retails for anywhere between $30 and $40, which is actually a decent price for what you get. If you're a Pokemon fan, you need to get this DVD set so you can follow Ash from the beginning of his Pokemon journey, and see where it all began.
I wrote this review after watching a copy of this DVD set that my husband and I purchased.
