Who Should Be At Your Birth?

Who Should Be At Your Birth?
Here are some questions to ask yourself when deciding who should be present at your baby's birth.

Will I comfortable to be myself in front of this person?
Is it okay with me that this person sees me naked?
Will this person be cooperative or will they try to take charge?
Will they have a job to do or will they just be observing?
Do I feel obligated or pressured to have this person at my birth?
Will this person add to the birth experience or will they require attention?

Generally speaking, it usually works best when everyone present at the birth has a specific job to do. People are nervous and excited and if they're not occupied, they can get quite annoying to a laboring mother. Some of the births I've been to have had quite a few people at them, yet they were extremely intimate.

Some of the jobs that can be assigned are: making sure the laboring mother is eating and drinking water at regular intervals (filling her glass and monitoring her intake); someone in charge of photographs and/or video; someone taking care of any older children; someone making sure that the mother's primary support and her midwife/doula is resting and is getting enough to eat and drink; if a homebirth, someone should make sure the bed has been prepared and can then do laundry after the birth; and someone should be on hand to make any emergency phone calls or errands as needed.

Don't let yourself be pressured into having anyone there that doesn't feel right to you. Anyone that requires a lot of attention will only hinder your progress. All emotional support should be focused on you, the birthing mother. Birth is a fantastic and deeply intimate experience. You can create yours exactly how you want it.
