Depending on skin type, heredity, nutrition and other factors such as increased hormonal activity, some women develop stretchmarks during pregnancy. These silvery lines on the abdomen, breast and thighs usually fade to some degree over time, but seldom disappear.
The best thing to do to limit the formation of stretchmarks is to slow down and control any weight gain. This is true not only during pregnancy but all through your life, because rapid weight gain causes the breakdown of the skin’s collagen resulting in stretchmarks.
The jury is still out on whether or not skin lotions and oils make any significant difference. But there is certainly no harm in trying. Rubbing your belly with cocoa butter or any other good cream or ointment is a loving gesture in itself. It will help you get in touch with the amazing and awesome changes taking place in your body and that’s got to be good for your mood and your self-esteem. Your baby will also certainly appreciate the attention and the massage.
