Finishing the Felt Turkey Pin

sewing turkey feathers Continue blanket stitching around the feather until you stitch just past the point where the next feather will overlap and lock your thread in place with a few stitches in an area that will be covered. Repeat for the remaining feathers.

While stitching, one thing to note is that once you reach an area where the feather is not aligned with the edge of the backing, the stitches should only go through the top layers and not go through the backing (see the photo of the back of the pin below). The arrows show examples of where the stitches should be sewn on the edge and where they should be stitched on the top layer only.

turkey sewnOnce the feathers are all sewn on, you can sew on the turkey torso. Before stitching on the head, sew or embroider the beak onto the head with orange floss. Use a single lazy daisy stitch to make the wattle (click to see a video of the stitch). The eyes are French knots in black floss.

Then, stitch the turkey head on top of the torso. Both the body and head piece are stitched only through the top layers and not through the backing.

turkey pin sewnFlip your turkey over and sew on your pin backing with dark brown thread that matches your felt. Arrange the pin back so that the pin opens at the bottom rather than the top. When stitching, make sure that your stitches do not show on the front side of the turkey. Also, stitch through the holes on both the top and bottom of the pin bar.

I hope you enjoy this project! Happy sewing!
