FMA Brotherhood Complete Collection One Blu-ray

FMA Brotherhood Complete Collection One Blu-ray
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Complete Collection One is a set that collects the first 33 episodes of the series together into one release, and it was made available as both a DVD set and as a Blu-ray set. This review focuses on the Blu-ray pressing of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Complete Collection One.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a re-telling of the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime series; from what I've heard Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is supposed to follow the manga storyline a lot closer than the original series did. In this telling, important plot points hit earlier in the series, new characters and elements are introduced that were not in the original anime series, and changes were made in regards to some of the characters that appear in both series. It's hard for me to say which series I like better; there are some ways that I feel the original Fullmetal Alchemist series was better, yet there are also things that I like better in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

When it comes to this Blu-ray release, one of my biggest disappointments is the fact that there is nothing anywhere to indicate which episodes are on which discs. There are no inserts that list the episode breakdown by disc, and the episode numbers are not printed on the discs.

As for the video quality on these Blu-rays, I would have to say that the images seemed to be a bit brighter and a little sharper in comparison to the quality of the five Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood DVD sets that I had viewed previously. According to the packaging, the video is 1080p High Definition 16x9 HD Native, and that for audio there is Dolby TrueHD: English 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD: Japanese 2.0. Subtitles are only available in English.

The bonus features on this Blu-ray release are a little on the skimpy side. Basically, it appears that all FUNimation did was to gather up the bonus features that were included on the original releases for the first three Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood releases and put them in this set. Considering this is basically a repackaging of the earlier DVD and Blu-ray releases for this series, this isn't terribly surprising.

On the first disc, there is only an episode commentary for the first episode. The second disc includes commentaries for episodes 10 and 14. The third disc only has a commentary for episode 23. The final disc has a commentary for episode 28, textless versions of all three opening songs that appear in this set, textless versions of all three closing songs that appear in this set, and trailers for FUNimation.com and several anime properties that FUNimation Entertainment was promoting at the time this Blu-ray set was released.

If you enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and haven't added it to your anime collection yet, the two complete season sets are the way to go in order to accomplish that. If you have Blu-ray capability, I would recommend purchasing the Blu-ray versions of these sets.

I wrote this review after watching a copy of the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Complete Collection One set on Blu-ray that my husband and I purchased.
