Jane Wilmer Who Loves Golf
Jane turned 90 this year but she loves the game of golf and would play every day if someone asked her to play. I have tee times for Monday and Friday and she always shows up ready to play. She might just play nine or ten on Monday depends on how early we start. She has a bridge game on Monday afternoon, sometimes she will play one more hole and then races off in her golf cart to the bridge game.
Jane had to stop playing golf earlier this year as in January she fell off her bike and broke her wrist. This bothered her not to be on the golf course, so her family came to visit and then she took a trip to Peru, South America and the capital of Cusco to take in the Inca civilization. Attempting to climb Machu Picchu and said she got half way up. Arriving home from that trip, she soon was gone again to the Canadian Rockies and by this time her wrist was beginning to heal. She would come to the golf course and try to chip and putt one handed. It was not long and she was playing full time with a brace on her wrist.
I first time I heard about Jane was when my husband and I were coming to Salado during the winter in the 1980’s. My husband was playing with a group of men but I could not find any women available to play golf. I joined an Art group so I could get acquainted with more people. One day I asked the group “Does anyone here play golf?” One gal said, ‘Sure Jane Wilmer does and the only reason she comes to Art Group is when it’s raining”. I remembered Jane’s name and the next year we came to Salado I got in touch with her. We have been golfing buddies every since.
There is not much that will stop Jane from getting out of the house. The golf course is her favorite place to go but she attends about everything going on in Salado. Through the years she belonged to many organizations in Salado including Belton and Temple. She made sure they all meet when she is not on the golf course.
The Ladies Golf Association for Salado was a sad group but it kept meeting on Wednesdays even if two of three showed up to play. Many different things were tried to hold the LGA together but unfortunately is finally gave up the ghost this past year. I think the LGA folding bothered Jane the most, as she always enjoyed the competition. I have never known anyone who was so competitive in a golf game, even if the game cost her twenty five cents, she usually won.
That’s our Jane at 90 years old and still looking for that golf game. She goes for every shot and here she is looking to make it over the creek which she did. Gold is always a challenge and every little success if celebrated, at this age it is a great accomplishment to still be playing. Many are cheering for you Jane you are our Player of the month.
