Hands Are Not For Hitting

Hands Are Not for Hitting the perfect book for parents and teachers who know children who hit others. Hitting is a stage through which small children go. In the picture book, children learn hitting is not appropriate behavior and why. Also, they learn the correct ways to use their hands. This is a necessary social skill.

Dr. Martine Agassi successfully tackles the problem of children hitting others. The picture book repeatedly tells “hands are not for hitting.” She explains to children in short sentences why hitting is incorrect. For example, hitting can hurt the recipient.

Dr. Martine Agassi gives suggestions of things to do when children have the feeling to hit. They can walk away from the situation. Another thing to do is to talk about their feelings. If children are feeling anger, jealousy or fear, talk about these feelings.

Hands Are Not for Hitting offers appropriate actions for hands. Children learn hands are for clapping, counting and making things. She tells hands are for waving, drawing, hugging and washing. There are plenty of nonviolent activities for children’s hands.

In the back of Hands Are Not for Hitting, there is a summary for parents and teachers. It tells how they can change children’s negative behavior to a positive one. The summary is four pages long.

Marieka Heinlen’s illustrations are eye catching. The pictures are bright and colorful. Children love to look at the pictures and do the activities in them.

Hands Are Not for Hitting is available as a board book (ages 0-4) or picture book (ages 4-8). The picture book is more comprehensive. This children book review is based on the picture book. The board book does not explain why not to hit. It does not have the summary of ways to help children stop hitting, also.
