Review - Urban Legends: 666 Absolutely True Stories That Happened to a Friend...
Guest Author - Kris Baker

Book Author: Thomas J. Craughwell
Publisher: Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers

If you enjoy reading Urban Legends without any debunking then this book is what you are looking for.

Urban Legends: 666 Absolutely True Stories That Happened to a Friend...of a Friend of a Friend is a combination of three of Thomas J. Craughwell’s hardcover books, Alligators in the Sewer: And 222 Other Urban Legends, Baby on the Car Roof and 222 Other Urban Legends: Absolutely True Stories That Happened to a Friend of a Friend of a Friend, and The Cat in the Dryer: And 222 Other Urban Legends.

In Urban Legends: 666 Absolutely True Stories That Happened to a Friend...of a Friend of a Friend you will find some well known legends, like Mr. Craughwell’s favorite, “The Stolen Kidney”, to the maybe not so well known, “Bart Simpson is Sleeping with Your Wives”.

The book is not only a great read but can also act as a reference guide. It is nicely laid out with each Urban Legend placed in a category and an index in the back which makes finding the story you want easy.

At the end of some stories the author provides variations of the Legend but if you are looking for reasons as to why these are Urban Legends you will not find them in this book. The book is really just a collection of Urban Legends.

I enjoyed reading Urban Legends: 666 Absolutely True Stories That Happened to a Friend...of a Friend of a Friend as I did read some Urban Legends that I had not heard of before and some brought back memories of the campfires and sleepovers when my friends and I tried to scare each other.

One of the things that I really loved about the book was the thirteen pages of “Short Takes” throughout the book. “Short Takes” are one sentence to one paragraph Urban Legends or hoaxes. Most of them sounding like they could have been article titles in a tabloid.

Aside from Urban Legends Mr. Craughwell also includes a couple of pages of weird laws which are sure to make you chuckle.

Size:
The 668 page paperback version, while thick (1.5 inches to be exact), is not large as it measures 7.3 x 5.5 inches. The plus side to its small size is it fits nicely in your hands.

Price:
This book is priced at $9.95 which is a great price considering you are getting three books in one. It is also perfectly priced for gift giving.
