Welcoming and Preparing a New Tarot Deck
Guest Author - June Kaminski

Bella Tarot Q & A

Bella Tarot Q & AUESTION

What are good ways to welcome and familiarize yourself with a new Tarot deck?

Bella Tarot Q & ANSWER

Good Question!

My personal "method" is quite straightforward: I get to know my new decks in the same way that I would get to know a new baby or kitten,...or new crystal, etc. for that matter.

I usually wait for a quiet serene time,...and sit near my altar to get acquainted. I put some mystical music on to play softly in the background, light a candle and my aromatherapy pot, and try to ensure privacy (not always possible in a busy household!) At first, I sit quietly with the entire deck in my hands and just feel the energy. Then I begin a thorough visual inspection - drinking in the symbology, images, colors, etc. of each card. I often trace the various curves with my fingertip too, to get a multisensory impression of the cards.

Then, I will maybe a do a mini reading with the cards to get used to their unique interpretations. If the author uses unique names for the suits, I review their themes etc.
Bella Tarot Q & A

In her article, Connecting with Your New Tarot Deck, Kelly O'Tillery suggests that we form a bond with our cards using a ritualistic approach. She describes how to smudge the deck, then advices us to sleep with the cards under our pillow for four nights in a row. and to store the cards in a very reverent and protected environment.

There are many ways to welcome your new deck. The key is to do what feels most natural to you. See your new deck as a wonderful new tool to help you to explore your inner self and your life in general....and the lives of those you read for.
