Cheap Eats in Japan - Cold Soba Noodles

Guest Author - Taisha Turner

The cheap eats, cold soba noodles, consist of buckwheat flour. The noodle strands are straight and thin. They are a favorite eaten by people of all walks of life. A bowl of cold soba noodles is a cheap and fast meal for the tourist or expatriate on a budget in Japan. The inexpensive meals are easy to find since everyone loves the delicious noodles.

Soba noodles are generally served cold during the summer months like cold pasta in the western world. The eater dips the cold soba noodles in a soya-based dipping sauce. A creative chef has a repertoire of various dipping sauce recipes.

Convenience stores like 7-Eleven or Lawson’s sell noodles twenty-four/seven. The ubiquitous noodle shops dotting the country offer the greatest variety of the cheap eats in Japan. In these shops, the tourist or expatriate has a wide choice of different sauces and toppings. The chef serves the cold soba noodles with the requested toppings and a bowl of chilled dipping sauce. Wasabi, sesame seeds, tofu, scallions are some common toppings.

Cook soba noodles like other noodles. Boil in water until el dente. Pour the noodles in a colander and drain. Place noodles in the refrigerator to chill.

Substitute the noodles in your favorite recipe if so desired. Try chicken noodle soup with soba noodles.

Soba noodles are found in Asian markets and some major grocery stores. Try these delicious noodles.

Cannot find the noodles in your neighborhood, you can purchase them from Amazon.com for a very reasonable price.
