The Three Gorges Dam project which started in 1994 is processing despite international reservations. The construction project in Hubei province of central China is slated for completion in 2009. The dam is the largest hydroelectric project in the world.
The dam is one and a half miles wide. It will stand 600 feet high. The reservoir will cover thousands of miles.
The Chinese government plans to accomplish three things by building the Three Gorges Dam. First, they plan to create a source of electric energy for its growing economy. China’s need for a large and steady source of energy escalates with its daily increases in manufacturing.
Second, the dam is to control the mighty Yangtze river. The world’s third largest river floods repeatedly. In fact, more than one million people lost their lives in the past one hundred years.
Third, the Three Gorges Dam with its locks will allow shipping in and out of China’s interior. This will give a shipping route to the sea for future produced goods. And, the route will bring raw materials to the new manufacturing plants.
