His parole officer, a beautiful woman named Ernestine Crabtree, is no-nonsense, and sets rules that will be difficult for Archer, including no drinking, no bars, no association with loose women, and must get a job. Archer goes to a bar the first night and meets the richest man in the city – a man who owns most of the city, actually – Hank Pittleman - who hires him to collect a debt from a man named Lucas Tuttle. Accompanying Hank is a beautiful woman, Jackie Tuttle, who happens to be Hank’s mistress, and who is also the daughter of Tuttle. After helping Jackie get a drunken Hank into his bed at a hotel, Archer spends the night with Jackie and then discovers that Hank has been murdered. Archer is the prime suspect, of course, and sets about trying to find the real murderer and proving his innocence.

Baldacci is a master storyteller, and weaves a believable tale that leads to more murders – blamed on Archer, of course, and pairs Archer up with other ex-cons who aren’t very upstanding. The characters are well-developed, and will remind readers of actual real-life people they might know. Baldacci’s easy-going style keeps the suspense building, while at the same time, keeps readers glued to the pages. Baldacci makes it easy to imagine the small town atmosphere. Obviously Baldacci has done his research, because the scenarios follow the time period perfectly, and readers will feel like they are living in the 1940s.

Baldacci’s new character, Aloysius Archer is a good one, and readers will be impatient for the next installment to be released. One Good Deed is highly recommended for readers who like a good thriller, and want to stay perched on the edges of their seats.
