God Love - Height, Depth, Length

God Love - Height, Depth, Length
How great is love? Thinking of powerful love, most of us would think of a mother’s love for her child. Deeper than even a father’s love, because that child came from her body. What could be greater? But we live in a fallen world, so even a mother’s love can be tainted, as we see in news reports, and may have experienced.

This may be the reason it’s so hard to understand and believe in God’s love for us. How do we experience God’s love that is absolute, steady, and infinite? All his attributes, everything about God is far beyond our comprehension.

The Apostle Paul wrote to Gentile believers in Ephesus. In his letter, he prays that they are able to grasp how wide, and long, and high, and deep God’s love is for them. Why did he pray that prayer? Everyone should have a basic grasp of love. But our understanding is based on experience. Even if we have had loving parents, later on in life we have been hurt by what we thought was love. So, is love something we can depend on?

This must be the reason Paul prays for the Ephesians. With all of us living with fallen-world experience only God can reach into our hearts and give us the experience of true, godly love.

Breaking down Ephesians 3:19, let’s talk about
  • The width of Christ’s love. – God has no boundaries. It’s impossible to get beyond his reach. His love reaches all the corners, nooks, and crannies of our experience. He lights up every shadow and dark place.

  • The height and depth of Christ’s love. - God’s love reaches higher than the highest we can rise in our elation or celebration. His love reaches through the deepest and lowest part of our discouragement and despair. It’s impossible to get beyond God love.

  • The length of his love. – Christ’s love continues for the entire length of our lives. He is eternal.

Paul prayed for believers. That all of us would experience this God kind of love. The love of Christ is too great for our earthly minds to understand. Only God can give us a glimmer of it while we’re still here on earth.

God, who is infinite in all his attributes and resources and allows us, as his children, to draw on his storehouse.

Paul prayed for us, and I pray for us, that through belief and faith we may begin to understand God love, and to realize it is a promise, an eternal promise.
