Two Very Tasty Potato Varieties
The German Butterball and the Russian Banana potatoes are two of the most flavorful of all the potato varieties

German Butterball Potato

German Butterball potato was rated #1 in a Rodale Organic Gardening Magazine’s taste-off trials of potatoes. This heirloom is a late maturing variety, ready in 85 to 120 days. The prostrate plants can range in size from dwarf to large. These bear very few blossoms.

The uniform potatoes have a smooth, lightly netted, golden russeted skin. These large potatoes can be oblong, long, oval, or round. They reach five to six inches in length.

German Butterball potatoes feature intensely gold to yellow flesh that is slightly drier when compared to that of other yellow fleshed potatoes. The buttery tender, flaky texture is creamy and melts in the mouth. These potatoes are great for frying, mashing, baking, roasting, steaming, or hash browns.

With the excellent flavor and its excellent eating qualities, it is obvious why this variety was rated number one. For best results, harvest these potatoes when they are small to medium sized.

German Butterball potatoes are very high yielding, and store very well. The plants are resistant to some diseases, but are prone to rhizoctonia.

Russian Banana Potato

This fingerling variety originated in the Baltic region of Russia. It is the most popular of all the fingerlings. It is widely grown in Canada and is the best known fingerling and the most widely grown.

Russian Banana potatoes are mid to late season, maturing in 90 to 135 days. The open pollinated plants are easy to grow. These were brought to America by early Russian settlers.

This is considered gourmet quality potatoes that really stand out from the other varieties. The small to medium sized potatoes are four to five inches in length. These are essentially crescent shaped and banana-like, tapering at both ends.

The skin is light yellow to buff, while the flesh is light yellow to gold. This is waxy and smooth, remaining firm after cooking. Russian Banana potato is pretty much an all purpose variety.

These are good for salad, roasting, baking, frying, and boiling. They have a wonderful distinctive, sweet, nutty flavor that is hard to beat.

Russian Banana potatoes are very productive. These store well. The plant is very resistant to scab. It is prone to verticillium wilt, leaf rollers, and late blight.
