The King Kalahaua Cottage Tasting Room at Maui's Winery is situated in one of the most historic buildings on the island and is a prime sight on anyone's touring list! The delightful cottage is located on the slopes of Mount Haleakala in Upcountry Maui and dates back to 1874 where it was used as an Island retreat for Hawai'is monarchs King David Kalahaua and Queen Kapi'olani. It is open nine to five daily (except for major holidays). They offer two complimentary tours of the grounds and winery operation per day at ten-thirty and one-thirty. No charge for these and groups are allowed to contact the winery for private tastings or events by calling 808-878-1266.
From the historical Rose Ranch, which is one of Hawai'i's most influential nineteenth-century sugar plantations to the present day Maui Winery this area is rich in history and tradition and offers a wide variety of scenic views as well as the other sights to see in the area and the wine tasting and tours offered at the Winery.
The ranch is arrayed with a vast green umbrella of giant trees that are hundreds of years old and have successfully shaded the grounds during celebrations and events even back to King Kalakaua's reign. What a delightful way to spend an afternoon, tasting wines, having a picnic on the grounds or taking one of their frequently offered tours! Learn about the lives of the Hawaiian Paniolo (cowboy) or check out the various little towns around and see gardens, recreational areas, coffee houses, or take a hike on one of the trails and see some of the area on foot.
