The third season of nip/tuck shifted its focus from Dr. Sean McNamara and Dr. Christian Troy to the women surrounding their lives. In the first two seasons, all of the women on the show took a backseat to the infamous Miami plastic surgeons. In this season, however, the women are running the show (no pun intended).

Julia McNamara, the matriarch, and love interest of Sean, Christian, and newcomer Dr. Quentin Costa, has changed significantly this season. Once portrayed as a vulnerable homemaker in the shadow of Sean’s prestigious career, Julia is now an independent career woman, complete with confidence, her own company, and a hot new boyfriend. She made the decision to finally end her dysfunctional marriage, realizing it was in the best interest for both her and her family. Julia has taken the steps to renew her life, and it is evident in her character this season.

Gina Russo is yet another former love interest of Christian’s. Gina had a troubled relationship with Christian and was highly dependent on him. This season, Gina is growing to be more self-sufficient by becoming a business partner to Julia, and moving on from Christian.

Liz Cruz is the longtime anesthesiologist at McNamara/Troy. Always one to freely speak her mind, Liz shares something with Sean and Christian that for once takes them by surprise. She announces that she’s leaving the practice to work for Julia and Gina. Liz has always been the emotional lifeline, mediator, and giver of unsolicited advice during Sean and Christian’s numerous life trials. With her gone, Sean and Christian’s practice continues to fall apart, as she is the proverbial glue that holds it together.

Kit McGraw is the newcomer this season. She is an uncompromising detective who will get as close as necessary to catch a suspected criminal. She used Christian and Kimber to reveal the identity of The Carver, and showed no mercy when she suspected Christian of the crimes. Kit is the female version of Christian: she’s cocky, vain, and aloof, and uses sex to get what she wants. Christian and Sean are no match for this tough-talking lady.

Kimber Henry has been Christian’s on-again, off-again girlfriend but this season she has had enough. After having a three-way relationship with Christian and Kit, Kimber puts her foot down. She wants Christian all to herself. Although she sacrifices her career, she knows she belongs with Christian, and the challenge of taming the bad boy is too good for her to pass up. Despite all of Christian’s doubts, he finally makes it to the altar, proving that Kimber is the only woman strong enough to transform him from a womanizer to a faithful husband.

Though nip/tuck will always center on its two main characters, it is good to see the women moving to the forefront this season. They bring a great dynamic to the show, and their continued developments may bring even more surprising plots. Who knows, maybe one of them is The Carver…
