Michael Phelps - Swimming Sensation
Guest Author - Denise Oliveri

Michael Phelps and swimming are synonymous. He won seven gold medals at the 2007 world championships and broke five world records. It is understandable why this 21-year-old swimmer is splashing with joy.

What is Michael's next goal? He is vigorously training in hopes of winning seven gold medals at the 2008 Olympics being held in Beijing, China. This was last done by Mark Spitz in 1972. Even if he does not accomplish this task at the 2008 Games, he will continue to strive for this personal victory in future Olympics.

Michael's Philosophy

He makes swimming in competition look effortless. He will be the first tell you that there is a lot of hard work that goes into preparing for a swim competition, including training, eating right, and practicing constantly. He trains with a team in Ann Arbor, MI. His training sessions may last anywhere from three to five hours a day, and at least six days a week. See, in order to be focused on a goal, actions do speak louder than words. You need determination and the mindset to get it done.

Not all of Michael's training happens in the water. He lifts weights, as well as performs other exercises to be physically ready for challenges in the water. His coach states that while other team members have beaten Michael at swim practices, when it comes to competition, Michael thrives on the intense emotions that he gets when in actual competition and is able to meet it head on.

Michael's Stats

Michael is a 6'4" man who weighs 195 pounds. Experts agree that this is the ideal figure for making long and fast strides through the water. In fact, Michael's body stature has helped him master such strokes as the freestyle, the backstroke, the breaststroke, and the butterfly.

Mental Preparedness

Michael listens to hip-hop music before every competition. He says this helps him concentrate on his race and is able to block everything around him out to totally focus on the task at hand. His coach agrees that Michael has a way of becoming relaxed and focused under pressure.
