Why did you model for Plush Cat/Satu? Most of my life I have always been the "bigger" girl in my family. Being exposed to the more blunt Asian culture I always heard "Your face is so beautiful, a shame... you should lose some weight." So, I grew use to this label. After giving birth I had started to climb back up the scale, my confidence dwindled. But one evening I saw a piece on TV for plus-sized models. They were so confident! Beautiful! Wow! They were the Plush Cats! I quickly wrote down their website and signed up as quickly as I could. The audition was a wonderful experience. Women complimenting each other left and right. It really was a support group. Satu with her camera brought out a confidence in me that had been buried. I modeled for Satu as a friend, I modeled for the Plush Cats as a woman.
What did you gain from the experience? After my first fashion shoot I went shopping for new clothes. I hadn't been shopping for years, why was I starting now? I saw myself looking at size 14's and not feeling ashamed when skimming past the 6's. I even went and revised my "fat" photos. Hey, they weren't that bad after all. With the Plush Cats I gained a new sense of worth and self appreciation. (And a killer pair of heels!)
Do you do other modeling? I'd like to do more modeling but with my location in Phoenix, AZ, it's a bit difficult. Every now and then when I am in town I meet up with the Plush Cats for a show. Being on the stage is a terrifying yet revitalizing experience. I'm hooked.
What's your day job? Currently I spend my days studying CADrafting at a local college. Looking into possibly Landscaping. Argh! So many choices! I have a child-like look on it. I miss Legos and piecing together a hide out for my GI Joes with sticks. I credit my toddler son for this. But he's not a job, he's my life.
What do you hope your picture says to other women? I want my photo to give the impression of ease to other women. When I first saw it, it surprised me. Oh my gosh, I was modeling in lingerie! I knew I was... but it didn't feel that way. I'm hoping it isn't interpreted as being "easy" because that is not how I felt at all. I could have been naked and would have felt the same. I was covered with something much more meaningful than any piece of clothing.
What do you hope your picture says to men? To the men that will see my picture, I hope it has a subtle approach. I hope they take a moment to read the 'article' instilled in my photo. There's a whole story behind everything in it. Don't stare too long! I'm only Miss February. Wait until you see the rest of us!
