“Nothing much happens until something is sold,” was a favorite saying of my father.
It's true. Whether you’re looking for your perfect mate, a better job or a new house, in order to achieve the best possible results, you’ll have to convince others that you’ve got what it takes to give them what they want – a happy life, a good day’s work or a debt paid in full and on time. And that takes salesmanship.
Although the "salesman" often has a negative image, it’s only because some misuse their power. Ethical sales is not about making someone else do what you want. It’s about getting what you want by doing all you can to help other people get what they want. A good salesperson is in the business of making sure everyone feels totally satisfied with the return on their investment of time, energy or money. It should always be a win/win situation.
However, most people, especially women, are resistant and even resentful of having to sell in order to get what they want. They're afraid of appearing pushy, greedy or even self-interested and they certainly don’t want to be rejected.
But you don't need to be pushy to get what you want through sales. You need to get clear what other people want, learn how to help them get it, decide what you want in return and be patiently persistent. Think of it more like a win/win negotiation, a fair trade or an honest bargain.
If you communicate your offer without any expectation or obligation, then you won't feel rejected. The other person either buys what you're selling or not. When you get right down to it, being rejected is usually nothing personal anyway. It’s just a signal that it's time to either move on to the next person or improve your selling skills.
If you learn from your experience, you can always get better and you can always have another chance. Maybe you weren’t clear about what the other person wanted. Maybe you didn't find out enough about how you could help them. Or maybe you just didn’t completely communicate the benefits of what you have to offer.
Being successful in life doesn’t happen accidentally. It takes honing specific skills – and the ability to negotiate and sell is an essential one. Just make sure you're providing a valuable product or service. And, when you add great selling skills to that mix, you get a win/win simple success formula.
