Plus Size Pregnancy Interview - Lisa

Lisa is from Palo Alto, California. She is 38 years old and currently weighs 297 lbs. Lisa works in the medical field. She has one child who is nine months old.

Did you have difficulty conceiving?
I never purposely tried to conceive, but I would say due to my age, I probably should have conceived years ago.

Were you overweight or obese during pregnancies?
Yes, I was obese during pregnancy.

Did you have any complications during pregnancies?
Not much complication, I had a prior hypertension problem, so during pregnancy it elevated then dropped significantly, I was considered a high risk pregnancy because of my age being over the 35 year mark and my weight.

Did you have a C-section? Why?
Yes, I had a last minute emergency C-section. The baby was past due they induced my labor, I dilated very slowly and the baby turned into a difficult position. Due to his heart rate sounding erratic and a low volume of fluid, they decided to do a caesarean.

Did you have an episiotomy or epidural?
Yes, I had an epidural

How much weight did you gain during pregnancies?
I gain approximately 30 pounds.

Did you lose your pregnancy weight?
I lost half of the pregnancy weight, I'm still in the first year after birth.

How much did your baby(s) weigh at birth?
My son weighed in at 7pounds and 6 ounces.

How were you treated by medical professionals during pregnancy?
Overall the medical professionals were very helpful, but there were stereotypes I would automatically have a difficult pregnancy because of my weight and that was not the case, they also assumed I would get diabetes, and that too was not the case for me. I was very healthy and so was the baby.
Moe: How were you treated by medical professionals during pregnancy?
Lisa: During delivery, I felt the medical professionals were a bit over the top with transferring me from one bed to the surgery table with way too many hands and orderly to help. I felt it was not necessary.

What was the best part about being pregnant?
Feeling the baby move inside of me.

What was the worst part about being pregnant?
Nausea throughout the entire pregnancy.

What would you have liked to have known then that you known now?
I wish I knew to not worry and fear so much about being an inexperienced mom, it truly does all come natural over time.

Do you wish you had lost some weight before getting pregnant? Why or why not?
Surprisingly my weight bore little factor on my pregnancy to be honest, so I did not wish to be slimmer except for I wanted to show more in my fourth and fifth month. I began to show towards the end of the fifth month, rather than the third month like slimmer pregnant women.
