Handling Criticism as a Player
Choosing to play football is an important decision. Many factors should go into making a commitment to the game and the team. One thing that should be part of the decision is how well you handle criticism. Here are a few pointers on how to handle criticism as a player.
Expect it- Whether it is from the coaches or the crowd, you should expect to be criticized. Not everyone is going to like you in life. There are going to be people who challenge every move you make on the field. You have to accept the criticism as part of the game.
Limits- You should know your limits. If you have a short fuse, you should know when to walk away from criticizing people. It is hard to walk away from a coach, so you have to often grin and bear it.
Prepare for Judgment- It is good to standup for yourself, but if you are in the wrong be prepared to take the criticism. Playing sports is about responsibility and when you make mistakes, be responsible enough to admit it and take the criticism, as well as the praise you receive when doing good.
Create a Positive- If you are being criticized, it may be you. So when you are wrong, you should be prepared to work hard and improve. It is not easy to hear when you make mistakes, but you should use the negative to create a positive. Take all the bad things said and use it to work hard at the gym or at practice. Win by proving everyone wrong. If you and your teammates can work to get a little better every practice and everyday, the team will go far.
Coaching vs. Abuse- There is a difference between criticism and abuse. At times, coaches have taken it too far. A coach should never put his hands on you in anger. Holding the face mask to get the players attention is one thing, but snatching a player around by the face mask can cause neck damage.
Find an Ally- Whether it is a parent or a friend, find someone to blow off steam with about being criticized. If you have a support system, the negative comments are easier to take. At times, parents are the ones doing the criticizing, so a coach could be a good ally. They can help you improve and end the criticism.
Your success as a player will be based on many things. How you deal with criticism is one way you can make a name for yourself, good or bad, in football. Do you want to be remembered as a good, determined player or a bad sport?
