Self discipline is necessary for a healthy, wealthy, happy life. You simply can not have a strong body, a successful career or a positive relationship without self discipline.
The problem is, you can’t learn self discipline without self discipline. But, don’t panic. Anyone who’s capable of getting up out of bed in the morning or holding their breath for a few seconds has some degree of self discipline. The point is to take what you have and keep building on it – one day at a time. Building self discipline is the same as building any muscle. The more you exercise it, the stronger it becomes. And it really doesn’t take a whole lot of time.
Self discipline is keeping your word – to your family, your co-workers, your friends and especially to yourself. It’s doing what you say you’re going to do, doing it on time and doing it to the best of your ability. It’s remaining calm in the eye of the storm and staying true to your purpose, no matter what else may be going on in your life and in the world. It’s overcoming procrastination and being master over self-indulgence. It’s taking charge of your life and doing the things that unsuccessful people are unwilling to do.
So, what have you been saying you want to do and haven’t done? Lose weight, stop smoking, floss your teeth, get more sleep, exercise, pay your bills on schedule, keep your desk clean, be punctual or spend more quality time with your family? Whatever it is, self discipline means getting the job done. It means, if you blow it one day, you get back on track the next.
Self discipline is not something you’re born with. It’s something you learn. And if you didn’t learn it earlier, you better learn it now. Because without it, it’s impossible to have a life that really works. You’re like an octopus on roller skates - busy, but going in eight different directions at the same time and tripping all over yourself in the process.
And, the benefits of learning self discipline are many. Take watching TV, for example. Eliminating just one hour of television a day gives you an extra 365 hours a year or nine 40 hour work weeks (or two whole months). Think of all you could accomplish with that much extra time – certainly something more positive than vegging out in front of the TV.
To top it all off, self discipline is the source of all self confidence and self esteem. So, if you’re game, decide for yourself where you want to begin and start building more self-discipline today. The potential rewards are infinite.
