Shakira, Back In Action
So, we thought the Latin craze was over in 2000... we were wrong. Questions like, “What ever happened to the hot latin craze that was so big a few years back?” come to mind when I hear Shakiras totally fiery song, HIPS DON’T LIE. This song is absolutely, without a doubt - hot - and is THE sexy summer song of 2006.
Shakira was born on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla Columbia. Her mother, Catalan/Italian mix and her father - Lebanese. Shakira definitely has a diverse background.
Shakira started composing and writing music when she was only eight years old. At age of 10, Shakira tried out for the school choir and was shot down. The choir director had this notion about Shakiras voice… se thought it was too strong for the choir. Her friends all made fun of her, saying she “sounded like a goat” throughout her young school age years.
Shakira did not give up… a television show in Shakiras area hosted open auditions. She made the show, and became a local personality in her hometown. A little later in life, on a plane trip to Bogota… Shakira happened into the best of good fortune. Sitting next to her on the airplane was Sony Colombia executive, Ciro Vargas. Is this not destiny?
After holding conversation with Vargas, he agreed to meet her in a hotel lobby a couple of weeks later. Vargas was very overwhelmed by Shakiras singing and took her cassette, to the song/artist director, who thought Shakira was a lost cause. Vargas was still convinced that Shakira had talent…
Vargas was determined that Shakira had the gift of singing. Vargas decided he would “dupe” Columbia executives into a bar… which just “happened” to have Shakira on stage that night. She sang three songs and was an instant sensation. By the end of the night, Sony finally made the right choice and signed a contract with Shakira.
At the young age of 13, Shakira debuted her first album. Less than one thousand records were sold and are now considered a collectors item.
At 15, Shakiras album BARE FEET did better than her first album… but, was not really “pushed” into the public. Shakira wanted to first finish high school before moving up into the “big world.”
In 1995, after graduation - Shakira decided to push BARE FEET a little further than before, selling over 5 million copies! After BARE FEET hit the top seller list, Shakira then released THE REMIXES which included songs from her earlier albums.
After the release of THE REMIXES, Shakira started rubbing shoulders with the likes of Emilio Estefan, Jr. and Gloria Estefan. In August 2000, she won the very popular International Viewer's Choice Award at the MTV Video Music Awards with "Ojos Asi".
In 2001 LAUNDRY SERVICE was a success, selling more than 13 million CDs worldwide.
In 2002, Shakira also released the Spanish greatest hits volume Grandes éxitos. A DVD and ten-track compilation album called Live & Off the Record, was released in 2004 selling over 3 million CDs worldwide.
"Hips Don't Lie" (featuring Wyclef Jean), was released in 2006, which is now number one for the second week on Americas Top 40 Countdown.
Mark my words, this will be a song everyone will love all summer long! It’s imaginative, sizzling, and seductive… just like the scorching summer sun.
