Pacifiers Believed To Help With SIDS
Guest Author - Sunniej Jackson

As I was reviewing a weekly medical research newsletter recently, I noted a very interesting article and wanted to pass the information on.

The medical phenomenon Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) leaves the majority of us confused and feeling helpless and scared that this can happen at any moment to our babies. There have been all kinds of research with astounding facts. Facts such as boys are more susceptible than girls. The more informed we are the better prepared we will be to handle unexpected incidences and occurences. Our babies are very special to us and require lots of attention to prepare them to be healthy toddlers, juveniles and later adults.

The article I read indicated that ongoing research suggests the use of a pacifier can lower the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and is beneficial for children under age one. Of course normal precautions should be maintained including regularly washing and replacing the pacifier and making sure not to attach to the infant with cords or strings.

Please note, however, that it is not known why the pacifier is effective. I will continue to monitor these findings and send out updated information as research reveals more specific information and other precautions and safety measures that can be used to help diminish the chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) occurring within our homes.

I suggest for all expectant parents to discuss ongoing research findings with their obstetricians and pediatricians and to stay abreast with relevant medical updates that affect our quality of life. The best we can all do is to keep up to date with new medical information and use necessary precautions.

As I find these tidbits of information, I will share the information with you in hopes of stimulating good questions to ask your physicians and pediatricians in an effort to obtain new information relevant to you, your families and friends.

Of course, as always, feel free to share your past experiences with us to help us all grow to a better understanding.
