The Two Faces of Jessica
When I started watching One Life To Live, Jessica Buchanan struck me as a unique character. Here was a young girl that any young woman would want to be. She was beautiful, rich, and well-liked. Normally, a soap character who was raised by wealthy parents is a spoiled brat who cares about nothing and no one but herself. But not Jessica. She wasn’t at all an arrogant, spoiled young lady, though she easily could have been.
I remember when Jessica was dating Cristian. It was first love at its finest. Of course, Rosanne Delgado couldn’t let the young couple be happy. She had to make herself number one in Cris’ life, no matter what the cost. Jessica showed her human side—she turned to her friend Will Rappaport for comfort. Their one night together resulted in Jessica’s first pregnancy.
The first time I ever cried over One Life To Live was when Jessica lost baby Megan. Jess wasn’t sure she was ready to be a mother, but she had continued with the pregnancy anyway. As time went on, she fell in love with the little girl. Her heartbreak and pain when the baby died were so very real.
Was the emotion due to the writing or the performance given by Jessica’s portrayer, Erin Torpey? Either way, it was spectacular. It was a level of emotion that has not been achieved in recent stories involving this character.
Nothing against Bree Williamson, who is now playing Jessica. She has done a great job with what she has been given. And she has been given some juicy stuff, including DID, the integration, a triangle with Nash and Antonio, and now Hepatitis C and liver cancer. All of these stories have been very compelling to watch.
The problem comes, I believe, in how long it takes for the stories to be told. The whole Tess/Jess situation took much too long to be resolved. When it was reveled that Nash is the father of baby Bree, it was obvious that Jessica and Nash would end up together. For some reason, Antonio seemed to be the only who didn’t know his wife-to-be was ton between him and Bree’s Daddy.
I am so fed up with Jessica’s actions and the whole Nash/Antonio thing that I don’t much care if she survives her current health crises. After running out on the adoption hearing, she finally told her husband that she loves Nash. And now after breaking his heart, she is going to ask for a part of his liver to save her own life. Antonio would be completely justified in refusing the surgery. The risks for him are high. He could be leaving his daughter Jamie an orphan. Yet he was raised to do the right thing, and that means, in this case, saving the life of his cheating wife. I hope Jess realizes how lucky she is.
