Challenges in making soap in warm humid climates If one lives in a humid or tropical climate, making soap will have its own challenges. The biggest challenge will be how to get the finished soap to dry out, how to prevent the soap from sweating which can lead to molds growing on the soap and DOS (The dreaded orange spots). This article is based on the soaping results and solutions of one soapmaker in the humid tropical climate of Jamaica. Though these results are the soapmaking will have its own set of challenges. Outside climate conditions dictate internal climate. This is what we will be discussing. If one lives in a humid climate here are some factors that change the normal rules of soapmaking. Drying time Wrapping material Susceptibility to mold and fungus Types of oils usd Drying Time Soap made in humid climates need a longer drying time. Regular cold process soap takes about 3-6 weeks to cure and dry out but soap created in a humid/tropical environment needs twice as much time to cure and dry out. In addition, the soap will have to be turned often. In addition it is adviseable to have a dehumidifier or circulating air via a fan or air conditioning so that soap is thoroughly dry and to avoid mold and excessive sweating on the soap. In a regular North American climate and even in the humid environs of say Florida, soap will behave much the same and can be made without all these precautionary measures, but if one lives in a tropical climate then these conditions apply.
