Health choices matter. There are 10,000 ways to die, but Americans tend to choose the same four over and over again. The word “choose” is deliberate, because most Americans are choosing a suicidal lifestyle.
“Poor diet, excess body weight, physical inactivity and smoking,” Dr. Augustus Grant, president of the American Heart Association (AHA), says, “are modifiable risk factors that contribute to the premature death of close to 1.5 million Americans each year.”
“Last year,” according to John Seffrin, C.E.O. of the American Cancer Society (ACS), “over 80 percent of all deaths in America were from 4 things – heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes.” And all of these are dramatically effected by lifestyle.
Most Americans are born healthy. They have the potential to live a long, happy, healthy life. Even most birth defects are not life threatening. So what happens? What goes wrong?
The answer is simple. People are ignoring the “writing on the wall.” They refuse to get the message that’s being drummed out on a daily basis - they can do something about their health. They can protect themselves from chronic diseases. Instead, the majority of the population "chooses" to veg-out on the couch, eat junk food, gain weight and smoke cigarettes.
The health crisis is so severe the ACS, the AHA and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) have recently decided to join forces to deliver a unified straightforward, understandable message. Most deaths are not caused by unlucky genes, environmental toxins or the “luck of the draw,” but by the poor lifestyle choices people are making on a daily basis.
But you personally don’t have to be one of the negative statistics. If you want to avoid heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer, follow the guidelines set down jointly by the AHA, the ACS and the ADA. Achieve and maintain your optimum weight. Eat a healthy diet, including lots of fruits and vegetables. Exercise regularly. And, if you smoke, quit.
Who knows? Maybe you’ll live to be a robust one hundred years old, be respected and admired for your success, wisdom and vitality, be loved and appreciated by your family, friends and business associates and die peacefully in your sleep with a great big smile on your face? It’s possible! And wouldn’t that be a nice way to go?
