Photoshop CS4 Interface

As you would expect, there are some new features and refinements to the PhotoshopR CS4 interface. The first thing that you will notice is the new tab-based layout of image windows. All the open images are displayed with tabs across the workspace, much like you see in the FlashR workspace. A double arrow button at the end of the row of tabs will display a list of all the open images. This is helpful if you have many open windows and not all tabs are visible across the top of the workspace. Personally, this enhancement did not fit well with my needs. If you find that this is the case for you, it is easy to change back to floating the image windows within the workspace.

Assuming you will want to give the new tab-based layout a try, it does have its advantages. For example, you can quickly change how many tabbed windows are displayed across the workspace. The Arrange Documents button at the top of the workspace has several preset window layouts ranging from 2 up to 5 up. This will display the open image windows evenly across the workspace. Displaying several images next to each other is great when doing a comparison. Going back to floating windows again, you will like that the free floating windows can float on top of the panels which gives you even more workspace. However, it can quickly become inconvenient when you need to get to those panels buried under a stack of floating images.

Another new button at the top of the workspace is the Essentials button. This gives you a drop-down list of all the preset workspaces and any custom workspaces that you have saved. If you check out these preset workspaces you will see that they are set up for common tasks such as 3D, web, video and painting.

If you have OpenGL support, you will like some other new enhancements. With the new OpenGL, you can get a continuous zoom that maintains a clear image at any zoom level. You can also rotate the entire canvas in OpenGL. This is great when you are working at different angles within an image.
