Happy Fathers' Day
Guest Author - Stephanie L Watson

Fun things to do on Fathers' Day. Sometimes, especially in hard times, it can be difficult to figure out what to do on Fathers' Day. It can be even harder if you're divorced because you don't have mommy helping the children plan Fathers' Day. Oftentimes the children are young, and they couldn't possibly shop on their own, and may not even realize what day it is. (If you're a mom of one of these children and you didn't help them, shame on you.)

Young children will love cooking breakfast with you, making pancakes, or French toast. Even though you are doing the work you can thank them for making you breakfast on Fathers' Day. It's okay to remind the children that today is Fathers' Day, a special day to be with their Daddy. If you have a Dad that you want to be with that day, take the children along. Help them make your Dad a gift too. How very special to be able to share a day like that with your children.

If you have school aged children, it is likely they knew that it is Fathers' Day. They may have even made something for you in school. If not, don't despair. The child is still young and can be taught about this important day. Give them some allowance and go to the dollar store and tell them to pick something out for you and you won't look. They will feel very special, believe it or not, and they will be happy that they bought you something.

Teenagers are a little more difficult at times. It is likely they bought you a card, but it is also likely they are not looking forward to a boring day with dad watching sports on TV all day. Even though this is “your” day it is important to find something to do together that you know your teenager will enjoy too. Go to a water park, a movie, bowling, play golf. Something active, teenagers are very antsy and need an activity to do to keep them from being bored. You may be surprised how much you might learn from your teen while playing putt putt.

The important thing to remember is to keep expectations low, but still celebrate the day. It isn't going to be the same as if you were married but it can be a very special day for you and your kids nonetheless. Even if you are broke, you can play cards, computer games, or go swimming. Just make sure that you spend most of the day actually together. These memories will last a lifetime.
