Starting a New School Year

Starting a New School Year
The beginning of a new school year presents many challenges. These include buying books, supplies and even after school activities. This time of the year can be even more difficult for divorced ex-spouses trying to jointly parent their children.

It is important for parents to communicate even if the divorce was bitter. Fighting over paying for school supplies does not help your children. They need to focus on their work and achieving the best grades possible.

First, both parents should review their child custody order and ensure they are in full compliance with all terms. It is however unrealistic to expect a court order to address all issues. especially those involving back to school issues.

Parents should try to meet in person, over the phone or at least communicate by e-mail. If this is not possible, consider using a counselor or mediator to resolve your differences. Agreements can then be reduced to a court order. This is certainly less exensive than hiring lawyers to litigate every issue and exacerbating negative feelings.

It is also important to not permit your children to use parents against each other. It is common for children to try to ask one parent for something and if that parent says "no" to try the other parent. This should not be permitted. It is especially important for children to understand that just because parents are divorced, it does not mean they can use the situation to their advantage. Parents should also not permit children to use guilt to get what they want.

Working togehter to achieve a good education, make good choices and develop into responsible adults is the goal of every parent. School provides the academic and social support to achieve these goals. Divorced parents should support their children to be successful.

While even the smallest issues can sometimes appear challenging, a positive attitude and good communication will help ensure your child has a wonderful school year. The support of both parents is crucial and each parent should remember this.
