Henry Ford, one of the wealthiest men of his day, said, “There are two kinds of people in this world - those who believe they can and those who believe they can’t. And, they are both right.” Henry knew that in order to create anything in his life, he had to believe he could. What is a belief? It’s simply a habit of thought – conscious or unconscious – that you keep on thinking. If you believe it always rains on your parade, guess what? You’ll always attract rain. But if you believe, “I’ve got a perfect life and it keeps getting better,” you will be right! As Eleanor Roosevelt, said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
It’s just as easy to believe you’re going to be a success as it is to believe the opposite. And, it’s a lot more fun. It may come as a surprise to some of you, but your beliefs are not etched in stone. You weren’t born with them. You’re not stuck with them. And you don’t have to believe something just because everyone else does. You’re always free to choose.
If a current belief isn’t working, if it’s not providing you with the results you want, you can change your mind. And you can change it again and again and again - until your beliefs are aligned with your dreams and aspirations. You can even change yourself from an “I can’t” person into an “I can” person. It’s not that difficult, unless you believe that it is. And then you can change that belief as well.
To change your belief system and create one that produces the results you want, you’ll need to get clear what it is that you believe about life. Make a list of the reasons why you think certain things work and why other things seem not to work. Take a look at your point of view about everything - relationships, health, time, work, play, etc. But, especially look at your belief system related to your goals.
Find out what you believe and then ask yourself, “Are my beliefs getting me what I want? What would work better? What do I want to believe? What thoughts would create the joy, peace, happiness and satisfaction that I’m looking for?” Then start thinking those thoughts.
The conceive, believe and achieve process works best if you start from acceptance. You can accept the life you have right now as being perfect. And you can still live in a state of joyful expectation of an even more exciting prosperous future. It’s a delicate balance. In the next section, we’ll take a look at how you can find the balance between your desires, your beliefs, the reality of your present circumstances and your vision for a fabulous future.
