On May 4, 2003, Terry and Diane Kriss listed their 200-year old mansion on eBay. As of right now, the current bid is listed as $106,100. What's the catch? The land is not included in the sale. The new owners of the mansion will have to dismantle every piece of the home and rebuild it somewhere else. This mansion is one of the 2,500 National Historic Landmarks in the country and it the only colonial-style seven-part Palladian structure standing in the United States today.
Here are some of the mansion's details:
Square footage: 7800
Property Type: Historic Mansion
Location: Fayette County, Uniontown, PA
Year Built: 1797
According to the auction ad, "The estate features 20 rooms, main living quarters, a two-story separate house and a three-story smokehouse – all in stone, hand-carved literally out of the wilderness by Isaac Meason, one of America’s first successful industrialists and founder of the nation’s iron industry." You can see the entire ad, here.
Why does the mansion need to be moved?
Apparently the current owners have spent numerous years fighting the Fayette County zoning officials about the development that is lowering the mansion's value. As a result, they are unable to overcome the complex planning and zoning issues involving the state.
You can get the full story and additional pictures of the mansion at it's official web site.
The auction is set to run for another 2 weeks and ends on June 3.
