EmailScrabble Can't Spell 'Reliable'

EmailGames are definitely addictive. You wait for that next Scrabble or Battleship or Clue game to come in, so you can trounce your opponent or sink that boat. I've always heavily promoted these games in my forums and articles, and play them quite a lot myself.

Therefore, it was pretty disappointing when I saw this announcement in one of my recent game messages:

Hasbro Interactive em@il games

We hope you have enjoyed the Em@il games series and we appreciate your patronage of Infogrames products, but we regret to inform you that as of May 1, 2001 Infogrames Interactive will no longer maintain the server that exchanges turns for the Em@il series of games. Please ensure that all in-progress games are completed by that date to avoid interrupted games.

(Please refer to the software licensing agreement that came with your Em@il games for details on service duration questions.)

OK, I went to the license. It said to go to http://email.games.com for more details. This is the same URL given at the bottom of all of the game messages as well. Guess what - it doesn't work any more!

Not only that, but there is NO notice of this anywhere on any Hasbro site. None in the Tech Support infobase. Try calling their tech support phone number (a non-800 number, by the way) and after many minutes of button pressing you still get ... nothing.

So, what's the story? Are they completely discontinuing their entire Email line? Without any alternatives? Without anywhere to go and learn more? It's pretty unbelievable that a product that is still being sold on the shelves is going to stop working in 4 days, without so much as a "go here instead".

I am actively following up on this story, and will report further details if I hear anything back.
