Worms Armageddon is a Blast

I admit it. Sometimes, strategy games can be a little too ... serious. The Command & Conquer series is known for this - featuring video clips of Nod minions shooting each other in the head on screen and commanders screaming at you to do better. It can be a little unnerving at times.

Then there are games like Worms: Armageddon!

We've always loved the Worms series. If you haven't tried it, you're missing a great deal of fun! Imagine the old "cannons" game, where you tried to shoot the enemy cannon by adjusting for height, distance, and wind. Now imagine instead of cannons, you have cute little worms that can move, wielding weapons like super sheep, holy hand grenades and bazookas. It's tremendously fun!

Worms: Armageddon pushes the fun factor even further along. This is the third in the series, and by far the best. The graphics options are amazing. There are countless backgrounds, all sorts of "create on the fly" maps where you indicate the style of map, size, depth, and many other aspects of its creation.

Next, the worms have even more personality. There is a huge number of voice types to choose from - Irish, British racing, you name it, it's in there. Sadly, there's only one set of female voices (a vamp, even) but in general the selection is great. You can name each team of worms, and every member of the team! You have have a team of great spies, or a team of Irish freedom fighters (my son's favorite) or any other group you wish.

You can even assign flags and victory songs to each team! In addition to most countries' flags, they have a rebel and Imperial flag from Star Wars. They have many countries' theme songs as well, plus quite a few entertaining ones.

So now that you've emotionally bonded to your team, it's time to put it into action. The interface is quite easy to use, and network play means you can take on whole hordes of friends' worms across your local net or the internet. The cries of triumph and defeat are vastly funny, and can make me laugh even in another room.

And, of course, any game that features a holy hand grenade as a weapon deserves to be tried :)

The demo of this game gives a glimpse of how funny it is, but I'd go straight out and just buy a copy. Buy two, so you can play with a friend! Then write me and let me know what your favorite voice style is!
