Pharoh: PC Gaming in Ancient Egypt

One of the parts of strategy games which brings me the most enjoyment is the building up of my forces and cities. When I'm playing Age of Empires II, I love organizing my towns well so that I can crank out calvaries. When I'm in StarCraft, my aim is to make hordes of flying units to decimate my opponent with.

It's no surprise, then, that I'm also a great fan of the Caesar series - you plot the destruction of your opponent, and tend to the needs of your people to achieve that aim. It only gets better with Pharoh.

First off, you get a REAL manual! None of these two-pages-in-the-CD-case nonsense jobs. The manual is hefty and not only goes into the details of each unit and building, but covers tactics and even the history behing Egypt which inspired the way the game works! I love learning about Egyptian culture, and this game goes deep into the details. There are the flood plains of the Nile - great for farming, but don't build a house there! There are deserts which are only good for settling industrial buildings on. There are meadows and mines and everything in between.

The Gods are important in this culture. The patron god or goddess in each town wants attention, and grants benefits when the offerings are sufficient. There are ostriches to hunt, hops to grow to make beer, and many other complex systems to develop.

You can even build your own sphinx!! What other game can offer that :) One of the key improvements from Caesar III, though, is water management. I hated water management in Caesar III, but here it's rather easy. The flooding Nile is also a fun feature.

For any city-building lovers out there, this is yet another fun game in the Sierra line, and well worth the purchase!
