The Wheel of Time
If you're into Science Fiction literature at all, you've heard of the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. This series is hugely popular, with its hobbit-like series spanning centuries of time and convoluted political storylines. It was perhaps inevitable that this story would now become a computer game.
Wheel of Time uses a very Thief-like engine: first person graphics, extraordinary attention to detail. You're wandering in the world of the books, playing a female aes sedai. The aes sedai are the channelers of the one true power, and as a member of the brown sect, your life is normally spent researching and studying artifacts and powers. However, of course, trouble has beset the land, and it is up to you to make things right.
You encounter the creatures from the books along the way - trollocs, whitecloaks, black sisters and more. The game brings to life the worlds and beings which populate the wonderful Jordan books. Gameplay is pretty straightforward, with enough puzzles and fighting to keep most gamers quite content.
It's a shame, then, that technical problems confront most users. The game requires 500mb which, while easy for our gaming systems, is quite a bit of space for many home users. On the three systems we tested the game on, each one had different errors with the graphic routines and needed manual assistance to work properly. There is no multiplay-on-second-CD option - all players must have their own copy of the entire game. The release notes are on line, forcing you to dial up to read what to do!
If you're a Jordan fan, however, working through these difficulties are nothing compared to the satisfaction you'll get living and breathing the world of the novels. The fact that you get to play a female role while doing so only makes the game that much sweeter.
