Kirby 64

You know a game is hot when you can't find it anywhere. We began hunting for this one the day it was released - one of the few I hadn't pre-ordered through Amazon.Com. It was a few days later before we managed to locate a copy and begin playing.

This is a refreshing game - it is bright, cheerful, and down to earth for the younger set, but the combinations and puzzles it poses makes it fun for older folks as well. You are the Kirbster, going from planet to planet in order to find crystal shards and rescue the fairy folk. The fate of their world rests in your hands.

The action is in essence a side-scroller ... it has nice 3D effects, but the gameplay moves left to right, or sometimes also right to left and up and down. There's no blood, just random *poof*ing of your enemies. The key to this game is in the weapon combinations.

Kirby can inhale his opponents and steal their powers. Inhale something spiky, and now you can turn into a pincushion. Inhale something that flames, and you now have flame breath. That is fun in itself, but it gets even better.

Breath in a fire guy, and then find a bomb guy and combine them together, and you get ... fireworks! Breathe in the lightning enemy, and then hunt down the ice monster, and you are ... a fridge complete with food!! It is too funny. Half the game is spent running around trying combinations, wondering what bizarre things will happen next.

There's the typical find-things-on-this-level, gather up health and life extension. There's the bosses that are harder to kill, and take a little special tactic to get past. Compared to a classic like Mario 64, this game is relatively short and a little too Yoshi-Story for older players, but that's not who it was intended for. For the gamers who shoulnd't yet be immersed in Tomorrow Never Dies or Perfect Dark, this is a wonderful game to sit down with the family and laugh yourselves silly while perfecting your arcade skills.
