Tzar: A little bit of everything

Strategy fans have quite a few choices when they want to look for a town-building and enemy-hacking style of game. There is Age of Empires, with its expansions and sequels. There's StarCraft and WarCraft, with its great balance of power and unique units. There's even Majesty, with its bribe-your-troops-into-being-helpful approach.

It seems that the developers of Tzar must have played them all, because getting into this game is like viewing a mosaic of all the others, with little original thought. The graphics and even level editor are exactly like WarCraft/StarCraft. That's not to say they're bad - the little castles, trees, infantry and other objects are quite lovely. They're hardly 'special', though.

The plot? You're a novice human, Sartor, who relies on his various friends to learn and regain his kingdom. Along the way you tell your forces to attack, you build barracks and taverns to build troops and trade goods, you farm farms, you chop down wood ... Age of Empires, anyone?

Yes, the photos of key individuals are pretty unique! Almost ghoulish, I would say. They do add some character to your missions. The variety of units you work with is also interesting, and choosing which to build and in what formations to deploy them is fun. The ability to generate random maps also keeps the game fresh long after you've beaten the set missions.

If you are a strategy gamer and have already become bored with Age of Empires II and StarCraft, pick up Tzar as something else to play for a week or two, to get yet another point of view on stone mining and resource managing. If you're still having fun with your current games, though, don't buy Tzar hoping it has new, innovative features.
