The Guild : Combat and Archery
When you talk to the guildmaster, you zap to a scene about years of exercise and study. You are ready to become a guild apprentice. "The real training was about to begin."
"Get out of bed lazybones" says your pal Whisper. You were supposed to meet the Guildmaster an hour ago. She'll race you there. It's really pretty easy - press and hold B, go right following her and then pass her to go arocss the river. He's waiting at the entrance of the ring. If you do NOT beat her it doesn't matter, he just says you're late.
Now you begin with the real training, with a real sword. You have to try to hit Whisper. It's the most basic of swords, an iron longsword. But at least it's not a stick!
Press white to equip, then just go and whack on her with X. Shortly he says to learn blocking. Press and hold Y to block, you can also roll with L. When you do this a few times, he says well done, now combine the two. Thunder comes along, he's the brother of Whisper. He thinks you can't keep up with Whisper. You do some combat - do a whack three times then a roll out of the way. You beat her butt.
Wait until a guy with a black hood shows up, and ask him for grading. Do the fight again and earn an A+ with that same technique. In return you get an iron katana. If you're in a quest mood, at the top right is a woman who wants apples for an apple pie. One is over by the chest on the way to the devils door. There are three by the fighting arena. When she gets these, she gives you a blueberry pie.
OK, now go to the archery area. You get a yew longbow. First, you shoot 3 stationary targets. A longer pull on the bowstring causes more damage. Use black to unsheathe, then hold L to lock on a target. Press and hold X to draw, then release to fire. When you shoot those three, he says well done, but most foes don't stand still. He'll give you a minute (i.e. 60 seconds) to score lots of points on moving targets.. The front = 1, middle = 3, back = 9. Also, more damage = more points.
OK, click L to switch view modes. Make sure you go to the edge of the ring, then hit black, then press in L, then aim at the far right corner. Try for the backmost target most of the time but also hit the middle alternately. We got 233 points - "Excellent shooting my lad. Do that in your skill test and I"ll be most impressed." Again, wait for the skill grader to walk to the archery range then talk to him. If you get an A+ get a special prize. It's one minute from your first shot so make that first shot count. We got 249 points, a new high score. "Never seen any better", you get an A+. He gives you a yew crossbow.
We went back and even just a 151 gets you an A+. At 145 you're told it's OK for a "first attempt".
