After a pretty introduction, you begin the game as the tailed Zidane. You walk forward to light a candle, and shortly your friends Blanc, Cinna and Marcus come into the room. Then your Boss in a mask, Baku, jumps in, and you fight him. Strange that they don't tell you anything about combat up until now (the lesson comes much later) but it's pretty easy. Hit attack until he gives up.

He tells you that you're part of the Tantalus band, and that your current quest is to capture the "babe-licious" princess Garnet. That's about it, next you switch characters to the hat-boy, Vivi.
