You begin with Cortana - the AI female who guided you in the first two games - talking in your head. "They let me pick, did I ever tell you that? Choose whichever Spartan I wanted. You know me, I did my research, watched as you became the soldier we needed you to be." She adds, "Like the others, you were strong and swift and brave, a natural leader - but you had something they didn't - something no one saw but me. Can you guess? Luck. Was I wrong?"

The game starts out in a misty jungle. A group of soldiers are wandering around, talking to each other. "This ain't good." "Damn." "How far did he fall?" "2 kilometers, easy."

"Stay sharp!" says Johnson

The soldiers are shown clustered around master chief (i.e. you)

"Gorman?"

"His armor's locked up. Gel layers could have taken most of the impact. I don't know, Sergeant Major."

Johnson leans over you, shaking his head. He takes your chip.

"Radio for VTOL [Vertical Take Off and Landing], heavy lift gear. We're not leaving him here."

You wake up, surprising him.

"Crazy fool, why do you always jump! One of these days you're going to land on something as stubborn as you are. And I don't do bits and pieces." He looks over the Chief. "Where is she, Chief? Where is Cortana?" he asks.

You hear Cortana's voice saying "Don't make a girl a promise if you know you can't keep it."

You say, "she stayed behind."

You're told that your "armor's still in partial lockdown."

checkpoint - and your control begins.

You look up and down - this sets your controls to inverted or not inverted, based on your preferences.

The Arbitor (predator style) shows up and Master Chief almost tries to kill him before he's told the guy is a friend. "We've got enough to do without you two killing each other," says Johnson.

"Were it so easy," says the Arbitor.

"We have to go - the brutes have our scent" warns the arbiter.

You now have to follow him.
