Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Walkthrough
Diagon Alley: Getting your Spellbook

You find Ginny and learn that first you need your Grade 2 spellbook. You get a silver sickle from them. Hey, aren't you supposed to be fabulously wealthy? What's with this one-coin stuff? Follow them to the store. Along the way zap a jar on the left and a bird cage on the right for more beans. Ignore the coin you pass - you can't get that until later.

Go into the book shop. Rummage through all the shelves to fill up to 50 beans, that's all you get until later on. Buy a book at the desk - it costs 1 sickle. Go figure! Now head out. Use your new power level to blast the barrels and get that silver sickle. You want to get a total of 12 silver sickles at this point because you'll be buying one thing that costs 4 and another thing that costs 8. So head down the street to the left further and blast the barrels down at the end there, then head all the way down to the opposite end (right when heading out of the book shop) and blast the barrels there too.
