Characters you unlock are used in "free play" mode where you explore a level and look for things you couldn't get in regular game play. Some characters have special abilities! Some are just fun to play with.

When you unlock a character in gameplay, you then still have to BUY that character in the shop to be able to use it. You can only use the special characters in free play mode or if you're able to use a polyjuice potion.
