August 2 2006 Walking Newsletter

Welcome to the Summer Walking Newsletter

Walking can be done by people of all ages and all you need is a pair of comfortable pair of shoes to walk in.
Walking burns up calories, strengthens your muscles and builds stronger denser bones so this holiday season plan some walks into your daily routines.

When the weather is hot it is important to take sensible precautions to protect yourself from harmful rays

Wear
A sunhat with a broad brim
Sunglasses
Sunscreen at least factor 15
Long trousers
A long sleeved shirt
Remember to keep your neck covered

Don't walk between 10am and 3pm -because this is when the suns rays are at their strongest.

For more info check out my warm weather walking tips here

It is important to drink more water when walking in warm weather so don't forget to take a drink with you.
If you are one of those people who perspire heavily then it is even more important you keep up your water intake.

Make your walking fun
If you enjoy doing something then you will keep on doing it.
So build fun into your walks - walk with a friend or loved one, walk with your children or parents (I realise that they are also your loved ones!).
Join a walking club, start your own walking group at work.
Walk in some beautiful scenery.
Walk different routes - from level pathways to gentle inclines, from pavements/sidewalks to grass or dirt tracks.

Remember to start walking slowly and gently build up your walking pace - think of a car going through its gears - give your body time to get used to the fact that it is walking.
If you cant't talk as you walk then you are going to fast - slow down.
