  • Crunchyroll has announced that the site began streaming the Ano Natsu de Matteru television anime series on January 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. EST. The series is being streamed in North America and South America.
  • The New York International Children's Film Festival will be holding a special preview screening of The Secret World of Arrietty on January 21, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. This screening is the English dub of the film, which will receive a theatrical run in North America starting on February 17, 2012.
  • Crunchyroll has announced that the site began streaming the Poyopoyo anime series on January 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. EST. The stream will be available worldwide except in Japan.
  • Crunchyroll has announced that the site began streaming the The Knight in the Area anime series on January 6, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. EST. The stream is available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • NIS America has announced that the company has acquired the home video rights for the Brave 10 television anime series. The company will release details of the home video release at a later date.
  • Sentai Filmworks has announced that the company has acquired the license for the Ano Natsu de Matteru anime series. The company will be releasing the series on subtitled DVD later this year.
  • The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog is reporting that the live-action film adaptation of Akira is being shut down due to "casting and budgetary issues." The blog also says that the film's production offices in Vancouver will be closed and the "below-the-line" staff have been "told to stop working"; in addition, the blog claims that insiders are saying that if the project's issues cannot be resolved, it "could end up being shelved entirely." The producers and director will spend two weeks revising the film's script, and that the budget for the film has had to be reduced. Meanwhile, Variety and Deadline.com are reporting that the end is not year for the Akira film, even though pre-production is being shut down for now. According to these two outlets, Warner Bros. wants the current script to be rewritten, and that they will be hiring "a high-end writer to do a polish" on the script before deciding whether or not to resume the project. Variety was told by studio sources that the script and cast are the issues and not the budget. Also, the option deals Warner Bros. had with two candidates for the role of Tetsuo have expired.
  • AnimEigo has announced that the company will be releasing Growing Up With Hello Kitty, which will be released in two volumes that each contain six episodes. Each volume, which runs about 44 to 45-minutes, will have an English dub. The sets will ship in March 2012, and will be available at Walmart, Toys R Us, Amazon, major retailers, and AnimEigo.com.
  • Sentai Filmworks has announced that the company has acquired the license for the Inu x Boku SS television anime series. The series will debut on digital platforms and television early in 2012, which will be followed by DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases later in the year.
  • The USA Film Festival in Dallas has announced that it is working with GKids to hold a screening of The Secret World of Arrietty on January 22, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. In conjunction with A-Kon, the festival will screen 11 Studio Ghibli films on new 35mm prints from January 21 to 22.
